Overview
Wilmot Mountain is a ski area in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, just north of the Illinois border, 55 miles north of Chicago and 40 miles from Milwaukee. Walter Stopa founded it in 1938, and his family ran it until Vail Resorts bought it in 2016 and spent about $13 million on renovations that year. It calls itself the Matterhorn of the Midwest and has about 200 feet of vertical, wide open slopes and night skiing on the whole hill.
Culture
Wilmot's ski and snowboard school has over 300 certified instructors and a full children's program. The Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council holds slalom and giant slalom races here eight days each season, and the resort runs weekly evening race training. Its longest run, State Line, parallels the Illinois and Wisconsin border. Vail lists Chicago among the metro markets its Midwest ski areas draw from.
