Overview
Buck Hill is a ski hill in Burnsville, Minnesota, about 15 miles south of downtown Minneapolis beside Interstate 35. Chuck Stone opened it in 1954, and David and Corrine Solner own it. Its east face has 310 feet of vertical and night skiing. Erich Sailer, its racing coach since 1969 and a 2006 National Ski Hall of Fame inductee, coached World Cup racers Lindsey Vonn and Kristina Koznick, who learned to race here. Paula Moltzan also began racing at Buck Hill.
Culture
Buck Hill is one of three alpine ski areas in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, with Afton Alps and Hyland. Homes cover the other sides of the hill, and a municipal water tower shares the summit. It hosted pro ski tour races during the 1973 Saint Paul Winter Carnival, and Minneapolis band The Replacements named a song after it.
