Overview
Afton Alps is a ski area on the St. Croix River in Denmark Township, Washington County, south of Afton, Minnesota. Brothers Paul and Bob Augustine and fellow farmer Paul Furlong opened it in 1962, and by 1976 it claimed over 200,000 visitors a year. Vail Resorts bought it for $20 million in 2012, aiming to build season pass loyalty that would bring skiers to its western resorts. It has nearly 300 skiable acres, 350 feet of vertical and 36 trails.
Culture
Afton is a city of 2,955 people (2020 census) known for Afton Alps, the largest ski and snowboard area in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Afton State Park and the town's small town feel draw day trip tourism. Olympic cross country gold medalist Jessie Diggins is from Afton. Vail lists Minneapolis among the metro markets its Midwest ski areas draw from.
